Milos island is part of the Eastern Cyclades, along with Kimolos, Sifnos and Serifos. It is one of the most original and unique Cycladic islands because of its amazing landscape. Milos' beauty and originality come from its volcanic origin, which has given the island bright colors and rocks of stunning shapes.
The uncommon morphology of Milos, together with its mineral wealth, creates dreamy combinations of spectacular rock formations and caves, mosaics of different textures and dazzling colors that astonish and delight everyone who visits this island.
Milos offers more than 75 beaches of silver sand and clear waters that can sometimes change to azure blue or emerald green. The most famous of all is the lunar Sarakiniko beach.
Besides its splendid landscape and heavenly beaches, the island is also known for its rich history. It is the place where the world-famous statue of the Aphrodite of Milos (Venus de Milo) was discovered on the 8th of April 1820 by a resident of Plaka. A French Consul purchased the beautiful statue from the villager and gave it as a gift to the King of France (Louis XVIII). Later, the sculpture was placed in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Last but not least, the impressive sirmata are also among the island's main attractions. Sirmata are traditional waterfront houses that served as fishermen's warehouses; in particular, fishermen used to store their wooden boats in there during the winter to protect them from rain, wind and other harsh weather conditions.
